Sulfamic Acid

Sulfamic acid, the monoamide of Sulfuric acid, is a strong inorganic acid known as Amido Sulfonic acid, Amino Sulfonic acid, and Sulphamic acid. It is a non-hygroscopic, stable white solid crystal or powder. The Sulfamic acid formula is H3NO3S, CAS no is 5329-14-6, and the molecular weight is 97.10 gm/mol.

Structure of Sulfamic acid

The structure of Sulfamic acid consists of one Sulfur atom covalently bound by single bonds to the Amino group and the Hydroxy group and by double bonds to two Oxygen atoms. It is a quadrilateral structure.

Physical Properties

Density and Melting Point :
  • Sulfamic acid has a density of 2.15 g/cm3. Its melting point is 205°C.
Stability :
  • It is stable for long periods at room temperature with a dilute aqueous solution. Nevertheless, it hydrolyses rapidly at high temperatures. It is also stable when dry but slowly hydrolyzes in solution forming Ammonium bisulfate.

Physical Properties

Corrosive property :
  • It is less corrosive to metals than other strong acids, such as Hydrochloric acid. The corrosion rate of metals in Sulfamic acid is mild Steel>>Aluminum>Copper>Brass>>18-8 Stainless Steel (18/8 is the composition of this Steel; it is 18% Chromium and 8% Nickel, making it very resistant to corrosion) nevertheless the corrosion of mild Steel was much lesser than that in HCl or in H2SO4.
Decomposition :
  • It decomposes when heated by emitting highly toxic fumes of Sulfur oxides and Hydrogen chloride.
Solubility :
  • Sulfamic acid is Moderately soluble in Water, with slow hydrolysis, and in N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF). It is Slightly soluble in Methanol (MeOH) and Insoluble in Hydrocarbons like Alkanes, Alkenes, and Alkynes.

Chemical Properties

Strong Acid

Strong acid – Sulfamic acid is a strong acid like Hydrochloric, Nitric, or Sulfuric. It behaves as a strong acid in an aqueous solution, meaning Water acts as a solvent. It loses a single proton from the Oxygen atom in Water, whereas the Hydrogens attached to the Nitrogen are strongly bound and do not break. It has a pKa value of about 1.0, which indicates its strong acidity.

( pKa is a number that gives the acidity of a molecule. It also measures the strength of an acid. )

Chelating Agent-
  • Sulfamic acid also acts as a chelating agent, forming complexes with metal ions. These complexes are stable and useful in electroplating, water treatment, and metal cleaning.
Forms
  • Forms like Sulfamic acid, Sulfamic acid inhibited (sulphamic descalant) and Liquid descaler (Sulphamic acid liquid) are available with Us.

Sulfamic Acid Uses

It is used as an acidic cleaning agent for ceramics, metals, cleaning a number of domestic appliances and industrial equipment, and as a super-efficient agent for descaling. Since Sulfamic acid has scale solubilizing capacity, it is considered appropriate for removing scale from heat exchangers, condensers, boilers, coils, cooling towers, and cooling and heating systems, thereby increasing the efficiency of equipment and plant.
